Massimiliana Sonego
Between Matter and Form

curated by Stefano Cecchetto

In the time/non-time of contemporaneity, the artist presents her work in a context increasingly ephemeral and precarious. Consequently, the artwork takes on a secondary role, as it is the figure of the artist who confirms, through her presence, the meaning and strength of the mise en scène.

Massimiliana Sonego, however, prefers to let her work speak for itself, which is based on the meaning of the artwork—in the sense of deciphering the sign. In this way, the image becomes a narrative emblem that reveals hidden formulas or those concealed behind the guise of deceptive figuration. From a carefully calibrated and skillfully organized painting, with vivid chromaticism and forms suggesting personal geometries, the artist then reaches an introspective and poetically lyrical phase. Within this intimate journey, Massimiliana Sonego does not seek prescribed symmetries but demands a gravitation of the intervention space toward new sensitive objectives of vision, which are thus immediately direct and significant.

Starting from the title of this exhibition: Scans and New Emergences — hosted in the rooms of Spazio Thetis in Venice — which suggests the meaning of a search equal to the dynamics of a dive into deep waters where one continues swimming without stopping to explore the unknown, occasionally surfacing for the liberating act of breathing. It is precisely in that instant emergence and momentary breath that one still captures the sound, the roar, and the immense vitality of Massimiliana Sonego’s inexhaustible pictorial universe.
