BRIGANTINE and new technologies for observing the sea

The nautical and port sectors today face growing regulatory, environmental, and economic pressure, requiring more effective tools to monitor and manage coastal ecosystems. In this context, marinas and small ports are no longer just service infrastructures, but true strategic hubs where environmental protection, safety, water quality, and economic sustainability meet.
Autonomous technologies, and in particular surface marine drones (ASVs), represent a concrete solution to these challenges. Compared to traditional monitoring, which is often episodic and expensive, ASVs allow for more frequent, flexible, and adaptable data collection in complex contexts such as port areas, lagoons, and high-traffic areas. This allows for a shift from a reactive approach to a more continuous and predictive one, with potential applications ranging from water quality monitoring to safety support and operational management.
The INTERREG IT-HR BRIGANTINE project fits into this scenario by developing and testing solutions based on marine drones at various sites in the Adriatic, with the goal of not only validating the technology but also facilitating its adoption by end users.
The workshop at the Venice Boat Show aims to establish a direct dialogue with stakeholders (including marina managers, port authorities, and private operators) to understand the needs, constraints, and opportunities related to the operational use of these technologies. The goal is both to concretely present the potential of the drones developed by the project and to gather useful feedback to guide future development and identify possible application models in real-world coastal and port management contexts.
The meeting will conclude with an operational demonstration of the drones in the adjacent canal in the Arsenal, to demonstrate how they can be used and the potential applications of the proposed technologies.
