Feng Zikai (1898–1975)
Celebre fumettista, scrittore, educatore, traduttore e designer editoriale della Cina moderna, originario di Shimen, nella contea di Tongxiang, provincia dello Zhejiang. Nel 1921 si recò in Giappone per motivi di studio. Dopo il rientro in patria, insegnò arte e musica a Shanghai, Zhejiang, Chongqing e in altre città.
Nel 1926, il suo maestro Xia Mianzun tradusse e pubblicò il celebre libro Cuore dello scrittore italiano Edmondo De Amicis. Feng Zikai realizzò le illustrazioni e la copertina dell’edizione cinese, che rappresenta una delle sue prime opere più significative nel campo dell’illustrazione e della grafica editoriale. Intrattenne stretti rapporti con l’amico giapponese Uchiyama Kanzō e la sua arte fu profondamente influenzata dal pittore giapponese Takehisa Yumeji. Il celebre poeta Rabindranath Tagore lodò le sue opere definendole “l’espressione di un mondo ideale difficile da descrivere a parole”.
Feng Zikai è considerato il pioniere del fumetto moderno cinese. Le sue opere, realizzate con uno stile essenziale a inchiostro, raffigurano scene quotidiane con poesia, umorismo e riflessione filosofica, dando vita a un linguaggio artistico semplice ma ricco di fascino e profondità. Il suo stile occupa un posto unico nella storia della pittura moderna cinese, tanto da costituire una vera e propria scuola artistica. Fu inoltre primo direttore della Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy e presidente della sezione di Shanghai dell’Associazione degli Artisti Cinesi.

Feng Zikai (1898–1975)
A renowned modern Chinese cartoonist, writer, educator, translator, and book designer, Feng Zikai was born in Shimen Town, Tongxiang, Zhejiang Province. In 1921, he went to Japan for further studies. After returning to China, he taught art and music in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Chongqing, and other places.
In 1926, his teacher Xia Mianzun translated and published Heart (Cuore), the famous work by the Italian writer Edmondo De Amicis. Feng Zikai created the illustrations and cover design for the Chinese edition, which became one of his early representative works in book illustration and graphic design. He maintained a close friendship with the Japanese cultural figure Uchiyama Kanzō, and his artistic style was deeply influenced by the Japanese painter Takehisa Yumeji. The renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore praised his works as “the expression of an indescribable ideal world.”
Feng Zikai is regarded as the pioneer of modern Chinese cartoons. Using simple ink-brush lines, he depicted scenes from everyday life with a unique blend of poetic charm, humor, and philosophical reflection, creating a personal artistic style that is both understated and enduring. His work occupies a distinctive place in the history of modern Chinese painting and established a school of its own. He also served as the first president of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy and chairman of the Shanghai branch of the Chinese Artists Association.
